Humble
and Awake by Thomas G. Casey, S.J. - $12.95
In
Humble and Awake, Thomas Casey presents the overlooked virtue of
humility as a cure to the coma that grips our culture. The
examples of the coma are everywhere, from the brutality of our
time through the ruining of our environment to our cultural
embrace of the seven deadly sins. We are misled, asleep, unaware
of our true condition, self-deceived. A radical reassessment is
needed, and humility alone can awaken us. Casey draws on diverse
sources—literature, film, philosophy, popular culture—to offer
a readable and challenging, frequently moving, meditation on where
we really are and what we need to do to awaken.
“Humility is of the utmost
importance for a comatose culture. First of all, it takes humility to
recognize that we are in a quagmire; secondly, it takes humility to
realize that we only sink deeper into quicksand the more we try to get out
through our own unaided efforts. The only way to rise from the morass is
by accepting help. Being humble means recognizing that we cannot do it on
our own, but we can do everything with God's help.”
Thomas Casey is an Irish
Jesuit priest and professor of philosophy at the Gregorian University in
Rome. Before his current assignment he lectured in philosophy in Dublin
and served as a chaplain to university students. Through his ministry with
young people he developed an interest in some of the key issues addressed
here—spirituality and culture.
Life
and Soul by Thomas G. Casey, S.J. - $16.95
In
Life and Soul, Thomas Casey invites us to reflect on and believe in the
most reassuring mystery of all the soul. While New Age writers cannot get
enough of the soul, many theologians seem embarrassed to mention it. Yet
this divine treasure is the very principle of human life, the mysterious
force that animates and enlivens us.
With a fresh and spiritual voice, Fr. Tom Casey sets out the beauty,
powers, and destiny of the human soul. He draws on scriptures, philosophy,
theology, art, literature and history to construct a timely and attractive
masterpiece. (Fr. Gerald O’Collins, author of Easter Faith: Believing in
the Risen Jesus)
Thomas Casey combines Irish charm and Jesuit seriousness to take us into
ourselves, to plumb the wondrous and mysterious depths of our being and of
other people. A fine and fascinating read for everyone. (Rev. Norman
Tanner, author of The Councils of the Church: A Short History)
Thomas Casey is an Irish Jesuit priest and Professor of Philosophy at the
Gregorian University in Rome. He continues here the quest he began in
Humble and Awake: to answer the deep questions of existence with the help
of God, who is Truth.
Music
of Pure Love by Thomas G. Casey, S.J. - $18.95
In this lyrical book, Thomas Casey sweeps us along on a pilgrimage toward pure love. Carefully distinguishing purity from prudery, he invites us to embark upon this journey with angels to unleash the limitless potential with which we are graced. Avoiding pop culture’s sentimentality, Casey uses angels to illuminate the way of life to which we are all invited, one that brings us ever closer to genuine holiness. “This book,” the author says, “is concerned above all with seeing ourselves and our world in a new way. This new vision unfolds in the light. The darkness that likes to lay siege to our souls must be firmly refused and forcefully rejected; the light is more than ready to embrace us.” To show how we are called to change our lives, he offers, among other illustrations, examples from popular culture, the opera Don Giovanni, and an imaginative reconstruction of the early Christian saint Cecilia.
“Father Casey gives us his own spirited and interesting meditations on faith, life, and especially love. In a time of bleak skepticism he sounds a note of joyous idealism and personal generosity and a call for love in a self-centered world.” Father Benedict J. Groeschel,
C.F.R.
